Daring
To Begin: Recognizing the need and value of educating women, the Ratnachintamani
Kanyashala was established more than eight decades ago, in the year 1924 to provide
free education to girls, at a time when female literacy was one of society’s lowest
priorities
The Founders
believed that there cannot be a cultured society without educating women, and
that if resources were limited the choice should be to educate a girl, because
when a woman is educated, it benefits two families and it also benefits the upbringing
of the next generation.
Inspired by a Jain Saint, Shri
Pandit Ratnachandraji Maharaj, who had so determinedly championed the cause of
free education for women, the two pioneers of this institution, Late Shri Nyalchandbhai
Sheth and Late Shri Durlabhjibhai Khetani, with the help of leading citizens and
philanthropists of Mumbai, took up the stupendous task of providing free education
to women, especially those from economically weaker sections of the society, by
setting up the SHRI PANDIT RATNACHANDRAJI JAIN (SPRJ) KANYASHALA TRUST. The aim
was to provide women equal opportunity to participate in socio-economic activities
and be empowered through free education.
